Open Source Software
Six units are currently available for this module,
developed by The
Commons Group and Anna Feldman for the
Association for Progressive
Communications (APC):
Materials are provided in OpenOffice.org and PDF formats.

Unit overview: This unit introduces participants to the idea of open
source software for use on servers, desktops and web sites.
Duration: 45-60 minutes
Target audience: Anyone interested in open source. Especially useful for
participants taking workshops on specific open source topics.
Prerequisite skills: Basic computer and web skills; interest in open
source software.

Unit overview: This unit presents a three step method for reviewing
and selecting open source software.
Duration: Short version +/-60 minutes (presentation and short group
discussion); long version 3 hours or more (presentation and hands-on planning).
Target audience: Managers and others in community organizations and
not-for-profits with responsibility for IT decision making.
Prerequisite skills: At least basic computer and web skills;
familiarity with the basic principles of open source software (could be gained
through the MMTK "Introduction to Open Source" unit).

These materials are intended for use with all open source units.
Unit overview: An introduction to using the OpenOffice.org
Writer word processor.
Duration: 3-4 hours.
Target audience: People wanting to develop their word processing skills
in an open source office environment.
Prerequisite skills: Basic keyboard and mouse skills; familiarity with
either Windows or Linux working environment; understanding of the files and
folders storage systems in a computer.

Unit overview: This unit aims to "kickstart" the move from MS Word to
OpenOffice.org Writer, and lay the foundation for further exploration and
experimentation.
Duration: 2 hours.
Target audience: People needing to move over from MS Word to OOo Writer.
Prerequisite skills: Good working knowledge of Windows and MS Word.

Unit overview: Step-by-step training in how to use the bibliography
database tool, for people writing complex documents in OpenOffice.org Writer.
Duration: 90 minutes.
Target audience: CSO/NGO workers involved in compiling reports and other
documents which would benefit from a bibliography.
Prerequisite skills: Participants should have experience of using word
processing software and of using a bibliography. They should understand the
purpose, function and application of a bibliography for long documents. Ideally
they should already be familiar with the basics of OpenOffice.org Writer, but
this is not essential.

Unit overview: An introduction to using OpenOffice.org Impress for
presentations - aimed at getting trainees comfortable with OOo Impress basics,
and giving them the confidence to go further on their own.
Duration: 3 hours
Target audience: People wanting to develop their slide-presentation
development skills in an open source office environment.
Prerequisite skills: Basic keyboard and mouse skills, familiarity with
either Windows or Linux working environment, understanding of the files and
folders storage system in a computer.

non-commercial use. However, the exact provisions of the license vary from
module to module - while most modules permit modification of the materials,
a few do not. The copyright statement included with each module sets out
